stepmother of the bride dress color

It's an evening wedding in May. Bridesmaids dresses are ice blue. Mother of the groom is wearing full-length indigo gown. Mother of the bride is not amicable when it comes to my husband. I do not want to cause any more disharmony than already exists. Mom is not re-married. What should I wear? Is black appropriate? Or a complementary blue? Or any color? Full-length?

Dear Stepmother,

Usually the stepmother dresses as one of the guests unless the couple is treated her as one of the mothers (special seating). So, you would need to know this first. If you dressed as one of the mothers and not being seated as special, this would be embarrassing.

If you are treated as one of the mothers, you wouldn't want to dress more formally than the other mothers, especially the MOB. You could coordinate with her, but black is a very good choice.

Best wishes,
