I am an invited guest to a wedding and reception in October. The church ceremony is at 1pm followed by the reception at 6:30pm. The invitation says formal attire. I have a brown, strapless, floor length dress, with a shawl/shrug to cover arms & shoulders. The dress has a slight tiered bottom. Is this out of place for the church service even if the invitation says formal?

Dear Guest,
It is so unfortunate that the wedding and reception is so far apart in time. Your dress would be fine for the reception (if it is being held at a very formal location), but not for a 1 pm formal wedding. For the formal church wedding during the day a nice suit or very nice dress will do. The dress could be something that you would wear to the nicest of occasion, elegant, but not overly fancy.
The attire for men would be a suit, so this can give you an idea of what you could be wearing for the wedding.
