We are from St. Louis, MO and my mother is planning a destination wedding on top of a mountain near Gatlinburg. Her wedding will be in October of 2006 and I am her planner. The one thing I cannot find any information on is what the bridesmaids and guests should wear to be comfortable during her ceremony. I realize it will be a lot cooler up there and we want to be able to tell people how to dress so they aren't shocked. Does anyone have any good ideas?

Dear MCMoore:
If you haven't done this already, confer with the Bride to determine what colors she would like for the Bridesmaids to wear. I'm assuming that Bride has already selected (or at least knows) her wedding gown. Then, schedule a visit to a local bridal salon that sells bridesmaids dresses. They will be best poised to tell you what fabrics and styles would best weather an outdoor/mountain wedding. I wouldn't be surprised if the bridesmaids have to wear jackets or long coat dresses.
As for the guests, I'm thinking wool and tweed for the men, and wool, cashmere or tweed for the women, if it's an informal wedding. If it's formal, then heavy satin or velvet for the women, tuxedos for the men.
But before you embark on your journey to the salon, or mail that information to guests, check what the forecast is going to be by visiting www.weather.com. Search until you get some information on what the temperature is like in Gatlinburg during that time. Doing so is important if you want the Bridesmaids and guests to be properly dressed and comfortable.
I hope this helps. Rhonda Allen, Bridal Consultant New Beginnings Weddings

Once you have an accurate idea about the proper attire for everyone, you may include this information on an enclosure in the wedding invitations. You could also help your mother create a wedding website to include all of this information.

Hi, Pastor Buddy here. We preform weddings outdoors (as well as indoors) in the Great Smoky National Park (Gatlinburg, TN.). I might even be doing your wedding. This area is unique. The responders above are excellent but lack the local knowledge of weddings here. First, you will be blessed by the awesome beauty of this area. Brides choose the outdoor wedding because of the splendor. It is particularly beautiful in October due to leaves changing. 10.5 million visitors come each year to this area. Over 20,000 weddings are preformed each year. Most of our weddings are casual. However, we do formal weddings as well. We offer a great deal of information on our website regarding weather, places to rent gowns and tuxedos. We also assist in the wedding planning. I suggest you contact the minister or wedding company that you are dealing with to get similar information. If it is us, we should have already volunteered to help. Below is the average high and low temperatures for October. Hope this helps. If you need more information, please feel free to email back.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate everyone's input. Pastor Buddy, my mom has booked her wedding through Almost Heaven Resort but her Uncle, a retired priest will actually be performing the ceremony. If that changes I will definitely keep you in mind!
Thanks again!
