I am going to a Garden Style Wedding on Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. at an historical Plantation outside of Richmond. It says there will be a formal dinner Reception after the wedding and I am not sure what to wear. I have a green silk halter Cocktail dress and a black lace over nude silk cocktail dress both knee length. Would they be too dressy? My other option in a pair of off white pants with a dressy top and heels. Or of course a new outfit all together. I haven't been to a wedding since my own 10 years ago.
Also, what should my children wear? My daughter is 9 and my son is 5.
Help please.
Sincerely, W. Harshman

Dear Wharsh,
The thing you have to consider is that this reception althogh at a mansion, will be outside in tents. The weather is very unpredictable for October. Right now Richmond is running still in the 80s and 90s but it could change quickly to the 60s and 70s. That being said I would consider something that can be layered and taken off if necessary. Your children should wear party dress, slacks and shirt (jacket) and dress and jacket or wrap for your daughter. Nancy Tucker President of Weddings Beautiful US http://www.weddingsbeautiful.com

My suggestion for you is to wear whichever dress is more formal looking since it was specified that a formal dinner will be served. By the descriptions you gave it sounds to me like the lace dress is more formal...so I would suggest that dress. Plus since the wedding is Garden Style...lace is very romantic and is great for outdoor occasions. However you know what both dresses look like on you and what accessories you would wear, so go with the dress that you feel is more formal.
As for your childern...you son should wear nice pants with a shirt, tie, and jacket. Your daughter should wear a nice special occasion/holiday dress.
