Is it proper to wear white to a wedding?

I have to go to a wedding June 17 where the reception is outside. I bought a white cocktail dress and I have recieved varying views on whether or not it appropriate to wear white to a wedding. Most people I've asked said it is fine as long as there is nothing "bridal" about it, however to people said absolutely no white at weddings. The dress is short strapless and made of a cotton polyester blend. I got it at Black Market White House. I would attach a picture but the dress is sold out and no longer on their website. Please let me know if the dress is appropriate to wear

Thank you

Dear Nothing Bridal,

It is true that white is fine as long as it doesn't appear to be a wedding dress. If the wedding is in a church, please wear a cover-up.

Best wishes,
