I will be attending a wedding in June in Southern California. The wedding ceramony is in a church at 5pm. The mother of bride told me that the wedding is formal and what I have in mind is a black cocktail strapless dress, is that appropicate? would a sheer black shawl be ok if strapless shows too much? Thanks!

Your dress sounds perfect. Having a shawl is appropriate for the church. Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".

Thanks so much for the reply. Another concern I have is the length of the skirt. the attachment is a dress that has a similar design, but its in red. Would the length of the dress be too short for the church? (mine is a little longer). Thanks so much for your help.

If the dress is longer, made of quality material, and is not red, you should be fine. Definitely a shawl or jacket would be advisable for the church. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
