I'm not sure if what I am planning to wear is appropriate for both the ceremony and the reception. The wedding is at 1 in a church, and the reception is in a hall. On their wedding website it states under "reception" that it's formal-suits and dresses. I was planning to wear a dress that's halter style. It ties around the neck. The dress is a little below knee length, white with large blue flowers all over it. I was planning to wear a white fringed wrap over it in church and I was planning to wear the same thing to the reception with white sandals. Is this appropriate or should I wear something else? The dress is not revealing other than the shoulders since I'm more of a conservative dresser.
Actually, your dress sounds as if it is more 'dressy casual' than cocktail attire, which is what the bride is alluding to on her site. Cocktail attire for women is the little black dress or its equivalent. For this time of day, of course you could wear something colorful. But, it should be of this formality.
Your idea of a wrap or even a jacket would be perfect because of the church wedding.
My suggestion is to get a dress that is a little more formal. By the description of the blue and white formal dress it seems a little too casual. Since it is stated on the website that the attire is formal, it would be more appropriate to wear a cocktail dress.
As for colors, black is always safe and a classy look. If you feel the dress isn't super formal, just by adding some beautiful crystal, rhinestone, or diamond accessories would do the trick. You can always wear a color, which is fun and a way to bring out your personality. Great colors this season are pale blue, champagne, lavendar, peach, sage, and soft pink.
