Mid October New England Wedding. What to wear?

Greetings,

I need help. What does one wear to a New England wedding in mid October? The weather could range from 75 to 55 degrees.

The brief church ceremony at 2:00 pm will be followed by the reception at 4:00. The reception will take place aboard a cruise ship.

Is black ok? What length dress? What other colors are appropriate? Day or evening attire? Summer or Fall? Open toe shoes, ok?

The invitation does not specify attire. It is written on fancy but not super-formal paper. The wedding party and the guests are a conservative crowd.

I look forward to your advice.

Dear Latostis,

Black is fine. An evening suit would be appropriate because of the weather and the cruise. Just match the style of shoes to the outfit--open or closed toe is fine.

If you want to wear a dress, a short one would probably be best in any darker color.

Best wishes,
