Our family is invited to attend an east coast reception for a wedding that took place in Hawaii in July, for an extended family member. The reception is to take place in a NYC hotel, mid-December, in the evening.
What would be the proper attire for our family? My husband and I are in our early 50's with a boy, 9, and a girl, 11. We work in professions that leave us fashion challenged.
I have seen the "little black dress" mentioned a lot. Is that the right choice? What are the alternatives? How about the kids?
Thanks.

Please ensure that your children are invited. Many times we just assume that our children are because the invitor knows that we have children. But, this may not be the case. Just a precaution :)
Yes, the little black dress or it equivalent is a safe choice. Your husband should wear a suit with your children matching your formality. A suit is best for your son and a nice party style dress would be perfect for your daughter. That time of year you may be able to find some beautiful dresses in velvet.
