Not family or bridal party, but confusingly close... what do I wear?

I am attending an outdoor afternoon wedding with a hotel reception at night. I just realized I have no idea what to wear. I never got an invitation becasue my fiance is the best man so I know nothing. If I wear a knee length pastel summer dress would that be fine, or do I need to go more formal because of the hotel reception. Also, should I dress up to match my fiance in a tux or does that not matter since I am not actually in the bridal party/family (although I was invited to the rehearsal dinner, etc. which is why I am so confused.)

Dear Guest of an Attendant,

Unfortunately, you will probably have to change unless you wear cocktail attire all day. It is unfortunate they chose to split up the events like this. It makes it very difficult for the guests.

The dress you describe seems perfect for the wedding, while a cocktail dress would be suitable for the reception.

You wouldn't be matching your date's formality because you are not in the bridal party.

Best wishes,
