We are getting married on Sunday, November 13th. It will be an elegant afternoon wedding (3:30 p.m.) followed by a cocktail hour, Dinner Reception with live music in the Winery's lovely Barrel Room. I want to make sure that my guests are dressed appropriately. Here in California everyone loves to be "casual." How do I gracefully go about asking my guests to dress accordingly. I would like the men in suits & ties and the women in nice evening wear. What do I say! Thanks so much for your help.

Dear Gitte:
Your wedding invitation (which includes the time of day and location of you wedding) is the way you will advise the guests of what to wear. What I mean is that you will use the style of the actual invitation. Wedding invitations are for letting guests know where and and when you are getting married, but they also are for stating a certain style and tone of for wedding. If you want your guests to dress accordingly, then make sure your invitation represents the desired style.
Don't make any notation on the actual wedding invitation regarding attire unless the ceremony and reception invitations are combined. Even at that, it must be essential to indicate black or white tie and that's not the case here.
