     Outdoor wedding guest attire

I am 20 years old and my boyfriend's older sister will be getting married in late May. It will be an outdoor wedding and reception in southern California, starting in the afternoon but going into the later evening. His sister and her fiance are pretty wild and crazy, but her family is a reasonably well-to-do southern family. I'm really not sure what sort of outfit to go for.

Dear Wedding Guest,

It is difficult to say because I don't have enough information. The venue and time of day would tell us a lot. If this is being held at an estate during the evening, you would be dressed in very nice formal clothing. But, if this were on the beach during the day, you could be in jeans.

Wear what you think would be appropriate for the location and time of day.

Best wishes,

Sorry, the wedding is at 3pm with the reception going through the evening. It will be an outdoor wedding and reception. I'm just having trouble deciding how formal it will be. it's in the afternoon, and their invitations weren't finished in time so they sent out postcard notices to "save the date", but at the same time, the reception will be through the evening with dinner served, they have hired valets and the bride was definitely flown to New York to have her favorite designer make her gown.

Yikes! This sounds formal. But, we still don't know the location. I suppose the safest route to go would be cocktail/semi-formal attire. This would be the little black dress or its equivalent. So, a very nice pant suit would work too. Southen California weather in May can be very nice. So, you can get away with a dressy halter with a jacket.

If you find out that the location is more formal and you feel that this will be glitsy, you may have to wear a long gown. Opt not to wear anything with rhinestones or sequins because the event begins during the day.

Good luck on this one.

Based on the information given, I agree with Rebecca that semi-formal attire sounds the most appropriate.

When you receive the invitation you may have a better idea of how dressy the occasion will be.

Good Luck!
