I'm going to a wedding Oct 2 in Kansas City as a guest of my boyfriend who knows the groom. He doesn't know many details and I have no idea what to wear. I don't do dresses well and this year's skirts are bohemian -- not wedding friendly. It's a 5pm wedding so will suit pants with an elegant top and some nice jewelry be okay? I don't know the bride or the groom?

Dear Kansas City Wedding,
Typically a wedding at this time of night would be cocktail attire, which is the little black dress or its equivalent. If you think that your suit pants and top fit this dress code, you are fine. Many times a nice pant suit fits in well.

As a woman I know what it is like to be invited to a wedding and not know what to wear. It makes it even harder when you don't know the couple getting married. However, even though you don't know them you should still dress appropriate to the affair. For starters, take a look at the invitaion and see if the wedding is formal. Just as a side note...evening weddings usually require guests to wear cocktail attire. My other suggestion is to look up the venue online and/or call them. If you can see first hand (online) what the location looks like you will be able to determine how formal you need to be. And if you talk to someone, I am sure a woman works there and she will be able to tell you what is most appropriate to wear.
Since you aren't a dress person, I would suggest wearing a skirt and dressy top. I would stay away from the pants suit only because it might not be appropriate. Look in the evening wear departments to find nice two-piece outfits. First of all, two-piece outfits are the newest trend for evening wear and second, you can be more comfortable. Last night I was watching TV and one of the segments was all about two-piece outfits that are formal and great for weddings and special occasions.
