Wedding guest attire for formal noon wedding

Hi,

I've been invited to a noon wedding at a Pittsburgh church at the end of September and the invitation states formal attire. The reception, also formal attire, is at 5 p.m. It seems to me that noon formal is less fancy than after 5 formal. The dress I had chosen is purple, knee length and flowy with a scooped back (not too low, though). Is it OK to wear that dress to both events? Do I need a gown for the reception?

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Dear Wedding Guest

Your dress would be very appropriate for the ceremony as long as the back is not so low that it would be offensive to the religious denomination hosting the ceremony. For a formal evening reception your dress would also be appropriate but formal does normally infer long or very dressy cocktail length.
