What do you wear to a rehearsal dinner?

I'm not very familiar with wedding attire, and even less familiar with rehearsal dinners. The wedding is at 6pm in a church in June, and I'm assuming it is formal (my boyfriend's sister is the bride so naturallly he is clueless about the details). Since he is in the wedding, we are going to the rehearsal dinner the night before, and I don't have a clue what I am supposed to wear to it. Also, is it appropriate to wear a black dress to the wedding and the reception? There's a little pink on the lining, but mostly it is just black.

Thank you to anyone who can help me!

Dear What to Wear,

The black dress should be fine as long as the wedding isn't ultra formal. I'm not sure about the rehearsal dinner though because you didn't say where it would be held. Typically, you could wear attire that you are comfortable wearing to a very nice restaurant.

First, find out where the rehearsal dinner is going to be held. That will help you figure out what to wear. Dressy pants or skirt with a nice top is probably your safest bet. If the restaurant is a classy place you should wear a pretty dress. Just think of your favorite outfit you would wear when your boyfriend takes you out on a date, and work around that to fit the formality of the rehearsal dinner.

As for the wedding, the black dress sounds perfect. A black dress is simple and classy at the same time. Have fun at the wedding!

Have fun,
