     What does Black Tie mean?

I am invited to a wedding in Atlanta in May and it is black tie. What does that mean exactly? Does that mean tuxedos with bowties only or would a nice black suit and tie suffice? I don't want to show up underdressed, but if I can get away without renting a tuxedo I would prefer not to.

Thanks

When your invitation states "Black Tie" this means formal attire. Men should wear tuxedos, women wear long cocktail dresses or dressy evening wear. Sorry, a black suit just won't do.
