What is formal attire for wedding guests entail?

What does formal attire for wedding guests mean? I am attending a wedding next June, the ceremony is in the late afternoon at a church with the reception starting at 5pm at a country club. I have heard the wedding attire for guests is formal.... does this mean black tie? Should I wear a longer length gown or tea length? Is black OK? Do the men need to wear tuxes?

Dear Formal Affair,

Yes, this typically means 'Black Tie'. You could wear dressy cocktail attire for both events in either long or short. Black is fine. Tuxes are evening formal attire and would be fine for the reception. But, to change would be a pain. So, a nice dark suit would be fine also.

Best wishes,
