Hi! I have been invited to a wedding at the end of July. The ceremony is at 3:30 pm and the reception is at 4:45pm. The wedding is outside under a tent and the invitation said formal attire. Can my husband wear a dark grey suit? Should I wear a cocktail dress, and what length would be ok (hoping that it could be on the longer side)? Thank you so much for your help.

Dear Guest,
Your cocktail dress should be fine unless this is ultra-formal, which I doubt that it is. The length is not that important. You could even wear a very nice pant suit. Your husband could wear his suit. You may notice some men in tuxes even though this is a wedding during the day.

I'm in a similar situation. The wedding invitation made no mention of dress at the reception, yet the wedding web site clearly says "Formal Dress" for the reception. I need to know if I should rent a suit, or if my sport coat and tie will suffice. My parents bring up an interesting point...not everyone uses the Web! Wasn't it odd to only mention the dess code on the web site and not on the actual invitation?? I don't want to have to rent/buy a suit unless I have to, but I also don't want to be the only one there "underdressed!"
Given the original poster's description of the times...we might be at the same wedding!!

The style of dress is usually not mentioned on the wedding invitation unless it is balck tie or white tie so this is not unusual. Typically you can tell the style of dress by the the formality of the wedding invitation, time of day, location and often times from the wedding web site too.
A sport coat and tie is not really considered formal attire so, if you do not have a suit, perhaps you could borrow one, rent one or even buy one. Buying a great suit would be a good addition to your wardrobe since you may have reason to wear the suit again in the future.
