What to wear October 1st 6:00pm wedding

I have never been to a night wedding. It is October 1st and it is at 6::00pm. What do I wear? Long or short? What color?

It depends on the formality of the event, which can be determined by the formality of the invitation and the venue of the wedding and reception.

Typically this would be cocktail attire--the little black dress or its equivalent.
