What would be appropriate for a guest to wear to an early December wedding. The church is at 11 am with the reception to follow. My niece is wearing a formal gown. Would a velvet skirt and brocade jacket or a georgette skirt set with a hankerchief hem be good? Would black be okay to wear?

Either outfit would be fine. But, I'd go with the velvet and brocade jacket because it is more on the formal side, you are family, and it is so close to the holidays. We don't get much chance to wear velvet. This is a wonderful chance.
