What type of attire to wear toafternoon wedding in December

I'm going to a wedding in december at 2 pm and I need to know what would be appropriate guest attire. It is a Baptist wedding and on the couple's wedding website the attire has been listed as semi-formal. I have been asked to handle the guest book and serve punch at the reception. The bride told me to wear whatever I wanted but I need help. I am working on a very small budget and I am also slightly heavy and need something that will hide the imperfection but will look nice. Any ideas what to wear and where to find it would be great. Thanks so much.

Dear Fretting,

Typically this would be the cocktail dress (little black dress or its equivalent), but I doubt that it will be that formal. I would imagine that you could wear a very nice dress, separates, or pant suit that you would feel comfortable wearing to the nicest restaurant and be fine. Many times people say semi formal just to keep people from wearing jeans.

Best wishes,
