Where is the best place to state the type of wedding attire?

Need to address an issue for those select few who think jeans and or shorts are appropriate to wear to a wedding. (I guess if it were a theme wedding, but it is not. The wedding is a Friday night at 6:00 pm.) What is the best approach?

One thought - Insert a separate little card stating no jeans or shorts and mailing to those individuals? HELP!!!!!!

Can you also define Black Tie vs White Tie? Would that information be printed on the invitation at the end?

Dear No Jeans,

Only formal attire is mentioned on the bottom of a wedding invitation and only if it also includes the reception information. Typically this is 'Black tie' or 'White tie'.

So, an insert could be used to inform the guests of your expected attire. Many guests appreciate this. Most probably you are looking for cocktail attire, which is also known as semi-formal. Here is the definition of this dress code from my booklet, "Proper Attire for All Occasions, Definitions and Frequently Asked Questions":

Cocktail Attire
  • Cocktail attire is basically ‘the little black dress’ or its equivalent for women and a suit for a man. For warmer weather, just think of that dress or suit in lighter fabrics and you are well on your way to making the correct choice.

Black tie is formal and White tie is the most formal of attire. Here is my definition from my booklet for only evening attire:

Black Tie

· This dress code connotes formal. In the evening, after 5 pm. and in cooler weather, men wear black tuxedos. Women wear cocktail dresses, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

· For warmer climates and during the summer months, evening black tie attire for a man would be a white or ivory evening coat, which is the same as the tuxedo only in those lighter colors. Women wear cocktail attire in lighter weight fabrics.

White Tie

· This indicates ultra-formal, which is the most formal attire. Men wear full dress, which is black tails, matching black pants, white pique vest, and white pique front wing collar shirt with white bow tie. Women wear long elegant gowns in the highest quality seasonal fabric.

You could also include at the bottom of your enclosure: "Please no jeans, t-shirts, flip-flops, or shorts.

Best wishes,
