appropriate dress for wedding when attire not mentioned on invite

I will be attending an upscale Oct. 22nd wedding and unsure what to wear. The ceremony is in an Evangelical Lutheran church at 4pm. The reception is at 6pm at the Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, PA. The invite did not mention attire. I was thinking of wearing a dark plum/burgundy color strapless, floor-length dress. It is plain, except for a slight cinch to one side at the hip. Is a floor-length dress acceptable for this type of reception? Of course, I will have a wrap on at the church.

Dear Jennjo,

The only reference to attire on wedding/reception invitations is formal and black tie. This one didn't mention black tie. So, I'm assuming your dress will be too formal. It sound like a lovely dress--too bad.

Probably cocktail attire would be best. This is the little black dress or its equivalent.

Best wishes,
