beach wedding - slightly odd situation

BlushMy boyfriend's best friends are getting married. They are young (20) and this wedding is just a small one for close family and friends. (they are both US Marines being deployed to Iraq this month, and when they return in 7 months they will hold an extravagent wedding). The wedding will be held on the beach at 3:00 here in sunny California. Usually I would have no problem with attire as I've been to various beach weddings (a fun sundress with a flower in the hair), but right after the wedding the reception will be held at a high class restaurant. When I ask my boyfriend what I am supposed to wear, he says "something nice - whatever you want." (he plans on wearing khaki trousers and a nice dress shirt.) This puts a twist on the attire and I'm unsure of what to wear now. Any suggestions?

Dear Beach Wedding,

He is right. You can wear whatever you wish. This seems as if it is informal, even with the nice restaurant reception following the 'wedding'. He is probably dressing just as most will.

If at all possible, could you ask your boyfriend to mention to this couple that they may want to read some of our posts asking about the two wedding phenomena? It really isn't acceptable and her guests may find it a negative. When a person marries, she is married. A second ceremony is a vow renewal. So, to help them avoid any embarrassment, it would be nice if they would just read a bit.

Thank you and enjoy the event!

Best wishes,
