I noticed that some of your posts indicate that it is okay for guests to wear black dresses to evening weddings. I was under the impression that guests should not wear black so as not to "dour" the mood, and female guests should not wear white so as not to "compete" with the bride. Are these outdated rules?

Dear VS,
Thankfully yes. It is still inappropriate to compete with the bride, so we must be careful not to wear something too white. But, black is definitely in.
