I'm invited to a wedding next month, ceremony at 2:30 and followed by reception. No dress code is stated on the invitation. I'm a college student and the most formal outfit I have in my closet is a pair of black pants, a pale blue button-down shirt and black loafers. Would it be okay to wear those to the wedding?

Dear College Student,
You just may be fine. However, it would be best to find a sports jacket to go with the slacks and shirt if you are a man or the female version of the jacket if you are female.
A good place to find jackets in fairly good condition is thrift shops, especially those in higher income areas. You may be able to find a good one for very little money. A friend may loan you one also.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't mention this in my original post but I am a woman and your advice seems like for a man. I don't wear skirts or dresses (haven't worn one in years), so that's why I ask if wearing pants and a shirt to a wedding is okay. If not, how can I dress up pants to make them wedding approriate (without spending too much money, of course)? Thanks.

I'm sorry. I did edit after my first attempt at an answer.
I am so used to business etiquette workshops I present for men. Sorry. I discuss button down shirts as business casual dress for men, so I didn't think of women wearing them. Silly me. Actually, my daughter wears them all of the time! She is very stylish.
So, as I said in my edit, it may be best to try to find a jacket--a nice jacket that is not part of a suit. But, if you can't find one through the thrift stores or a friend, don't worry too much. You may find others dressed the same as you. So many dress casually these days.
Enjoy the event. No worries. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now

If you have a thrift shop or consignment shop near you try and stop in to see what they have. Many times they will have some classics like a pair of black slacks that you could dress up with a white silk blouse and nice pair of pumps. Consider buying a few of these classics to have for future. If you have a store like Kohl's or Walmart see if they have a classic black pant. These could get you through a few more formal events dressed up or some job interviews if you dress them down a bit. Classic black slacks and pumps are two good options to have in your closet. Just don't select anything too trendy which could go out of style quickly.
You could also check with your roomates or girlfriends to see if anyone has something they could lend. Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".
