wedding attire for a cocktails/dinner reception

my husband and I are invited to a wedding in TX. The wedding is in the afternoon at a park, then a cocktail/dinner reception later that evening followed by a dance.
What is the proper attire for the cocktail/dinner? The invitation doesn't specify what type of dress.

It really should be informal, so dress as you would to go to dinner--not too fancy.

Enjoy your event!

Dear Anglesdream,

Please do contact the bride or her mother. Texas in the daytime can be rather warm. Find out what they prefer guests to wear. With the limited information I have, I would have my husband wear a suit and I would wear a fancy sundress with a hat. (The hat would come off before the reception.)

I hope this helps,

Dear Angelsmith:

I agree that, for you, a dress or suit and, most definitely a hat, would be very apropos for an afternoon wedding in the park. Parts of Texas can get chilly in the fall & winter months, so a sun dress may not work unless you have a wrap to add to your ensemble.

I must disagree, however, that you should remove your hat at the reception. The only "rule" here is not to wear an afternoon, "Beach- like straw" hat (made of raffia or seagreass for example) into the evening. A proper hat will carry you right through into the evening. A smaller, rather than larger brim hat would move easily through the entire day.

A suit is always a safe choice for your husband.
