Help! What to wear to a late summer outdoor reception held from 1-5? Mother of the groom says "not dressy", but I don't hink that means casual either. I'm thinking that a pantsuit with sandals could cross categories if need be, but I'm not sure if that is appropriate. Any thoughts?

The pantsuit sounds perfect. If you want to wear a dress then I suggest a nice summer dress in a jersey knit material. The material of the dress makes it more dressy casual, so you'd be fine.
