My daughter and her fiance want him to really stand out from the groomsmen at their formal, evening, late spring or early summer wedding. They are considering tailcoat and top hat for him alone and tuxedos for the groomsmen. The bride will be wearing a formal white gown. The wedding will be more contemporary than traditional, however he does not want to look stupid. Would any of the following be acceptable attire? Do you have any suggestions?
Groom-white tailcoat/Groomsmen-black tux
Groom-black tailcoat/Groomsmen-black tux
Groom-white tux/Groomsmen-black tux
What would be appropriate for guests to wear?
Thank you very much for your time and expertise.

Re: [cherigreen] Different attire for groom and groomsmen
[In reply to]
Dear Cherigreen,
Tailcoats are reserved for very formal weddings and all of the groomsmen would be dressed the same. It may appear as if the groom didn't understand dress codes if he was dressed that drastically different. One way he could distiguish himself from the others is to wear a different color tie or a tuxedo in a different texture. His corsage might be different as well.
White coats are reserved for warm weather locations and summer months.
We only mention 'black tie' or 'formal attire' on invitations. Either of those would inform the guests the proper attire.
