Our ceremony is at 3:30, reception at 5:00. I know that traditionally white tie is reserved for after 6:00, but because our wedding is very formal in all other respects (black tie for guests, 12 piece orchestra, champagne carts, white-glove servers, etc) we were thinking about bucking tradition a bit and having the groom wear white tie. Also we assume that this is the only time in his life he will ever have the chance to wear white tie. So we have two questions: (1) is this a terrible affront, given that we know it is not altogether proper, and (2) do the groomsmen all wear white tie as well?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

A white tie and vest for the groom is fine for that time of day. Please put the groomsmen and fathers in black tie and vest. Make the groom stand out with white. I think your choice is very appropriate. Dont worry about etiquette, they are not paying the bills.

Dear Groomsmen's Attire,
If you are going to adhere to tradition and etiquette, the groom and groomsmen would be wearing a black or Oxford gray cutaway coat, striped trousers, and pearl tray waistcoat. It is not a 'terrible affront' not to follow the guidelines, so many are following their own piper these days. You will have to choose for yourself which road you wish to follow.
