We are getting married in July at 3PM due to church availability. However, our cocktail hour doesn't start until 5:30PM with dinner at 6:30PM. The venue is a castle with a five-star kitchen and gorgeous ballroom and we're having a band. We would have said black tie but added "optional" so that those who don't own a tux will feel comfortable. Given that the event spans both day and evening, what type of tux (tails, other) and color (black, grey?) is best for the groom and groomsmen? Would they need to change from day to evening? Please keep in mind that an ivory jacket probably won't be flattering on the groom and the bride's dress is bone/ivory making it hard to match. Thanks

Dear Bride,
Making your guests wait for so long isn't courteous. It would be best to plan something for them.
Because the reception is in the evening, the men could wear tuxes during the day. This has become appropriate. But, the color should be ivory or white because of the time of year. July is typically warm weather in most locations, so this is most proper.
Including "optional" or "preferred" with black tie is confusing to many. It is best to just write black tie.

Thank you very much for your help. We have taken your advice and added a Lion Dance that will start a little before 5PM. That way, by the time the ceremony ends ~ 4PM and the people get to the church and through the line for valet parking, they will have only about a 30-40 minute wait which will give them time to freshen up.
We are also working on getting everyone to match.

Our question is regarding start times of weddings. WE always thought that if the wedding is 7:30 or later it is assumed to be formal. Is this no longer correct? Thanks, ms
