I have put a deposit down on a dress that is a size 8. I can fit into it, but does not zip all the way and is noticeably tight in the hip area. The dress was a stock dress in the bridal shop, so I was able to get it for a good price.
The seamstress told me that she could make it fit. (A size 12 wedding dress is what fits me well.) I believed her and put the deposit down two weeks ago. But now I am very worried that she will have to add panels or something to make it fit, which I know will take away from the look of the dress. Is altering from a size 8 to a size 12 fairly common practice? Or should I be worried? I have read that altering to make a dress larger is not recommended (of course,I read this after buying the dress).
I am considering losing my deposit if the dress is going to look bad, but my budget makes that a last resort decision. I am dieting and exercising and I have until April 2007 (wedding day), but I know I need to be realistic about what I can do, so the alterations are really what will matter. Any insight from those who have experience with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: [AnneV] Alterations: Expecting Too Much?

I'd be surprised if a size 8 dress could be altered to fit a size 12. One size maybe but...?
Read over your contract on the dress and be sure of their return and deposit policies. Then go back to the store and speak to the owner or manager. Tell them your problem. I doubt they'll refund your deposit but maybe they have another dress in your size.
Eat healthy and exercise regularly but don't get into any fad diets. If you're unhealthy for your wedding it will show. You won' want to be tired and washed out. If you end up losing a few inches you can always have the dress taken in, but, letting it out - well- that's just very difficult.
