Bridal party attire for garden wedding

Our daughter is planning to have a September garden wedding at a beautiful (and formal looking) historic mansion. What kind and length of gown would be appropriate for the bride and attendants? She has not decided if the wedding will be early afternoon or later afternoon. Since it is a garden wedding, could the MOB and the MOG wear tea length dresses regardless of what the bride and her attendants choose?

Dear Helen M,

It really depends on the formality of her wedding. Although, typically her dress could be long or tea length with a detachable train in organza or tulle if it is more formal. Or, for an informal wedding (100 guest or less) a simple dress with a short veil and no train would be perfect.

The bridesmaids' dresses would have to fit the formality of the event. If your daughter chooses that this should be fairly formal (more than 100 guests), then the ladies would wear either long or short dresses that are not too elaborate. Informal wedding would call for no more than two bridesmaids (usually one) and dresses that are just 'dressy', not formal.

Mothers should wear dresses in the same formality and length as the bridesmaids. Tea length seems best for garden weddings.

Best wishes,
