I am to attend a formal, outdoor wedding at 5:00 PM (October, in Florida.) My husband is to be an usher, so will of course be in a tux. I am wondering if it is appropriate for me to wear dressy pants. They are long, layered and wispy, with slits going up to the knees. I am hoping to find some dressy vintage shoes (circa 1940’s) as well as a vintage black, wide brim hat. If this is OK, what rules should I keep in mind for the top/blouse? Is the wide brim hat OK for night time, and will it be OK to continue it to the indoor reception? Thanks so much for any help.

Re: [nihility] Formal attire with hats and pants

Dear Guest,
You would want to dress as one of the guests and not match the formality of your husband.
The pants should be fine, but I'm not sure about the hat. Hats are common in some parts of the world. But, this can be a problem when the hat is always in someone's way. If it is a large brimmed hat, it just may be.
Your entire outfit should match the formality of the little black dress--cocktail attire. So, choose a top that would suggest this.
