How much to pay for wedding dress alterations

I found the most gorgeous dress online and I took a chance. It ended up being even more beautiful in person. I paid $300.00 and was thrilled.

I took it in for alterations and the woman quated me at 500.00!!!!!

The dress needed the bodice taken in only like a half inch on either side, there is beading. The bottom hemmed, the train bustled, and the straps taken up.

The alterations are more than the dress. My mother and I teared up. We're making payments on dress alterations. Now we have a 100.00 deposit down and not worth taking it out cuz well lose that money. Are we really dumb for leaving it there?

Gown alterations are not cheap. In essence, the seamstress is taking apart the creation, and sewing it back together. Seamstresses are paid according to the labor. And, the more delicate the gown, the more it costs. What you paid for it is not a factor in how much the alterations are.

I can't say whether the alterations would be cheaper somewhere else. What I can say is that you were going to have to get them somewhere. Do you love the gown? Will it cost you more money to take it somewhere else?

If the answer is yes to both of these, then perhaps you should just grin and bear it. Try to look at it like this. You are actually having a custom made gown that will fit only you. Now, that is special. Smile
