Is it illegal to make a duplicate of a designer wedding dress?

There's a dress I love that is way too expensive from the

designer, but affordable if I have it custom made by

someone else. I only want to do that if it is legal and

ethical though.

Anybody know if it is legal? Any thoughts on the ethics of

it?

Thanks

Dear Charity:

I believe that if you are making only one dress for yourself it would be all right to copy a design but copying for resale would be a no-no. Speak to a professional seamstress, show her a picture of the designer gown you have in mind and ask her to simulate it. She could be adverse to making a true knock-off but she may be agreeable to sewing up something very similar, including the features you love about this dress.
