what is a formal versus informal wedding dress?

I an older (late 30s) first-time bride and will be wearing a long, unstructured (very flowy, body conforming, but not clingy) bias-cut, sheathlike dress with either a halter top/bare back or spaghetti straps and draped front. The dress will probably be a silk charmeuse.

Question: From what I have read, this type of dress appears to be a less formal style. Would it look inappropriate to have me bridal party decked out in formal wear? Personally, I think this type of dress looks quite dressy!

Thanks for your input!

Dear Bride-to-Be,

Your dress sounds beautiful and formal...very "Hollywood Glam". As for the bridesmaid dresses, if you want them to wear a formal gown, that's perfect. Both yours and the bridesmaid dresses will compliment eachother.

Have fun,
