What style wedding dress would go with a pearl crown?
I know it seems backwards to work from the headpiece to decide on the dress and hair but the crown has a lot of sentimental value to my mother and me. The crown is the only thing she has left from her wedding dress. It is made of wire and pearls. Shaped in the traditional crown shape (i.e. ^^^^) in the front three “v” hangs a small glass beads.
I have always thought I would wear it on my wedding day but because crowns are out of style at the moment I am having trouble figuring out what styles of dress/hair would work best with a crown. I know the crown would look fine with a poofy ballgown dress, but that really isn’t my style. Any other suggestions?

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! It would be easier for me to advise if you could attach the photo of the crown. However, a traditional shape requires a traditional dress. For your hair, I would recommend an "updo"; however, the dress doesn't necessary have to be a poofy one; a classic style dress with the beading that matches your tiara would look fantastic. Make sure to bring your tiara to the bridal salon where you will be selecting your dress. Page through bridal magazines even before you go; look at classic designs with beading and maybe asymmetrical ruching of the bodice, anything that looks "out of the ordinary", because that's what your tiara is: something rare and unusual. Hi Katy! Wearing your mom's crown is more about the tradition and emotion surrounding this decision than it is about matching it to a gown. I also followthe fashion industry very closely as well as home design. Mixing period styles is very chic. It even shows up in bridal fashion shoots. I could see your crown being set off with a sheath gown or any contemporary style. What would make it more current,is staying away from a full veil and keeping the veil one layer, longer and not too wide. Trying to match the headpiece or make "it" work may make you feel like you are being boxed into a gown choice you don't want. I have taken moms' headpieces and made them work in todays setting, it is done all the time. Bringing it into today is the key to keep the look chic and getting the gown you want. Once you get the gown then write back and ask about the hairstyle! Gretchen Maurer, Stylist Instructor and Author of The Business of Bridal Beauty.
