     unity candles

My daughter is getting married and the groom has 2 sets of parents and would somehow like both mother and step mother to lite the unity candles. Could you explain if this is possible?

It is really a personal choice on the part of the couple. Both sets can light the one side candle together representing the groom. However, at the weddings I have performed the lighting of the unity candle was reserved for the biological mother. If the groom wants to include his stepmother, he may wish to have her do a reading during the ceremony. In that way, she is included in the ceremony.

I have done several ceremonies where both the mother and step-mother together light one side candle. That is, they each light a much smaller tapered candle which they then jointly use to light the side unity candle representing the spirit of the groom.

In these cases, the bride or groom felt that both mother and step-mother raised them. It was what was in their hearts to do, and therefore completely appropriate.
