Do we need a wedding usher?

Since our wedding will be fairly small, do we need to have a wedding usher. We thought the guests can just come seat themselves. Is this proper?

The purpose for ushers is to help prepare the wedding site for the ceremony, as well as escorting guests to their seats. They also lay down the aisle runner down for the bride and help guests get to the reception site. You may not need them to seat guests, but think about whether they will be needed for any of these other tasks.
