Is it appropriate to ask a pastor to travel to your wedding

My groom and I live in MA. We are planning an outdoor ceremony in the fall. Neither of us is particularly active in a church where we live, however being married by a minister is important to me. The Pastor of the church I grew up in, who was very influential in my religious upbringing is now serving a Reformed church in NJ. I have not kept in contact with him over the years. I am very comfortable with him and his style of service and would love him to marry us. Is it appropriate to contact him and/or ask him to perform the ceremony? We would pay for his travel expenses of course. Thanks

I don't see the harm. In fact, he would probably be flattered.

I agree. This is a very nice compliment.
