The bride wants her mother to be escorted by the groom. Is it wrong to have the groom escort the mother of the bride and then her father escorting her while the grooms parents just walk behind or is the groom just supposed to be at the altar waiting while the MOB is escorted by an usher?

I'm not sure what you mean. The groom's parents walking behind the bride and her escort? The groom's mother would be seated before the mother of the bride.
Normally, an usher would escort the mothers and the groom would be awaiting his bride at the altar. But, if this is an informal affair, the rules are not so strict. The groom could escort both mothers and then walk to the altar to wait for his bride. That could work. The only problem that I could see is that he will be walking back and forth in front of the guests quite a bit. And, what of the best man? It could appear as if he is the groom if he were standing alone at the altar. So take all of this into consideration.
