Does anyone know exactly what mutual declaration is and how we would be wed by this. We would like to just have a quick ceremony with ourselves and our witnesses, how could we do this? We don't want a judge, minister, or any of that. We live in Kansas if anyone knows the laws please let me know. Thank you..... :-}
You can get married quietly at city hall and then do your own ceremony by mutual declaration. Another option is to find a county clerk who is willing to simply bear witness to your ceremony, sign the license and mail it into the appropriate office. Someone who is licensed by the state--- whether cleric, judge or county clerk---needs to sign your marriage license saying that they indeed witnessed your vows. Unless you are Quaker, in which case the ceremony is done by mutual consent and then a marriage certificate is signed by the entire congregation. If you like this last option, call your local Quaker Church.
Many couples opt for a no-fanfare city hall ceremony (it takes 2-5 minutes for the ceremony) followed by an intimate meaningful ceremony done in their own way, and sometimes by a friend.
