     Protestant/Catholic outdoor ceremony

I am Catholic and my fiance is Protestant (Congregationalist). His minister is a family friend and will be coming to NY to perform our ceremony outdoors ( I have always dreamed of an outdoor ceremony). I would also like to have a Catholic priest or Deacon celebrate, so that our marriage is recognized by the Catholic church (this is very important to myself and my family), but no one I have asked from the Catholic church will do it. What can I do, aside from having two ceremonies, to have my marriage recognized by the Catholic church? Would any Priest or Deacon be willing to do something like this? Thank you so much!

It is unlikely that you will find a Roman Catholic Priest or Deacon to do this. An Independent Catholic Priest or Deacon would do this however, the issue with the marriage being recognized by the Catholic Church is the same as just having the Protestant Minister officiate the wedding. The Catholic Church will recognize it as a valid Christian marriage but illicit, in that it is not in accordance with cannon law. After the wedding you can apply to the Bishop for a Dispensation for Absence of Form. Your parish Priest should be able to assist with this. The Roman Catholic church normally do not sanction outdoor weddings. In order for a Priest or Deacon to officiate one they must get permission from the Bishop. Permission is rarely granted. Best wishes to you and may God bless your upcoming marriage. Bob
