     Reception VS Ceremony

I'm confused and hoping I can get some help here.

I know that sometimes people get invited to either the ceremony OR the reception, but not both. How does that work? Is it proper etiquette for them to be invited to the ceremony and not the reception? Or vice versa? I would think the ceremony and not the reception since the reception costs so much, but I'm not sure how it works.

Thank you in advance.

Dear Confused,

It is impolite to invite guests to a wedding and not the reception. It's like saying that you are good enough to give me a gift for my wedding, but not good enough to feed and entertain. It is fine to invite guests to only the reception though. It is the party to celebrate the big event.

Best wishes,
