When do we say our vows?

Traditionally, I thought that if you wrote your vows then you would read them durring the ceremony. But, at a friend's wedding they did the regular vows that the priest says for you to repeat in the ceremony and then, in the middle of the reception, they announced that they wrote vows and wanted to read them in the middle of the reception.

Is that normal or did they just do their own thing? My fiance and I are writing our own vows and want to know what is traditional.

Dear Zander,

What they did is very custom. I've never heard of it before, although there is nothing wrong with stating your love in verse during the reception.

The vows are recited during the wedding ceremony.

Best wishes,
