Who Can Throw Flower Petals Down Wedding Ceremony Aisle

My son is getting married this summer. There will be no flower girl or ring bearer in the wedding. Do you have any suggestions who could disperse the flower petals on the aisle before the procession? I have a 9 year old niece that will be taking gifts at the wedding, and we considered having her disperse the petals, but we decided it wouldn't be right to have her do the petals and then just go sit down (like people do when there is a real young girl doing it.) We thought of just having the petals out before hand, but with ushering people in, the petals would be "brushed" away by all the walking on them. (I'm not sure if the petals will be real or silk.) The bride asked her maid of honor if she would do it and she did not want to - understandably. We talked of having 2 of the ushers use top hats filled with silk petals and disperse them just before the processional - if there were a runner instead, the ushers would pull that out - but decided that might be kind of "cheesy". Any other suggestions or thoughts?

If the venue where your son is getting married is setup so guests can enter from the inner and outer sides of the aisle, then have the guests ushered toward the outer sections. This would allow someone to lay out the petals in the inner aisle beforehand. But this also means all of the processional will walk in the midst of the petals and not just the bride. So, she would need to be okay with that.

Alternatively, have the ushers pull out a runner, which would already be positioned at the altar, and have a female hostess come and sprinkle the petals afterward.

These are some options we use when there is no flower girl and the bride is insistent on having petals in the aisle for her entrance.

Thanks for the suggestions. That may very well work to have guests ushered in from the outside of the pews.

As for the other suggestion, the bride does not want the runner at all. Would it still be appropriate to have a "female hostess" (maybe the 9 year old niece) distribute the petals? Would she go to the front and distribute them from the front to the back? And what would be her "title" for the program?

Thanks for all your help!

Yes, the niece can be the one to sprinkle the petals. She should be listed as a "Hostess" on the program since she isn't an actual flower girl. To give her a little more to do, you could also allow her to pass out programs, or point guests to the sign in registry. These are things a hostess would normally assist with. This way, it allows her to be more involved, in addition to petal duty:-)

As for when the petals go down, right before it is time for the bride to come out, the niece would walk to the front of the altar and start sprinkling the petals back towards the door where the bride will enter. She goes out, the door shuts and the next time it opens the bride enters.
