My friend is getting married on June 2nd and invited almost 400 people to her wedding, though only 79 are attending. Her mother originally refused to allow her to invite friends from our medical school class, though now wants her ask additional people to make the minimum required by the reception site. She is considering sending them an e-mail or note to invite them. Is this acceptable? Everyone has known that she is getting married and it will be obvious that they are last minute add-on guests.
It sounds like you already really know the answer. It would not be polite to invite anyone else now. Imagine how you would feel if you knew you were being invited at such a late date? I certainly wouldn't appreciate being the "warm body to fill the seat" and then be expected to smile and bring a gift.
