My parents (I'm the bride) are paying for the reception, which includes the venue, food, and drink. Are they entitled to invite a bigger percentage of guests because they are paying?

Dear Megan,
Not too long ago, the couple's parents, mainly the bride's, paid for the wedding/reception. Today they are not obligated to do so. Because of this they do not invite either. This is not to say that if your parents wish to contribute, they will not feel entitled to own a chunk of the guest list. After all they are paying for the party. So, if they feel that it is their right to a part of the guest list, it may be best to decline their offer of contributing.
You could remind them that they are not obligated to contribute and thus everything they offer is a gift--no strings attached--and hope they agree.

You could gently remind mom that this is a party for your family and friends. Thank her perfusely for hosting beforehand, though.
