I am invited (with a guest) to a friends wedding reception. The actual wedding is a destination wedding. I do not have a significant other or anyone I would bring with me to a wedding. I won't know anyone but the bride and I haven't even met the groom yet. Would it be bad etiquette not to go? I don't really have a good reason not to go other than I won't know anyone and I'm rather shy. Should I be honest and tell her why or just make an excuse? I'm very happy for her but I would be very uncomfortable going by myself.

Dear Marie -
Do you have a friend or a relative who might make good company? The guest does not have to be someone you're dating.
If you cannot attend, don;t worry. Couples understand that when they arrange a destination wedding that there will be those who cannot, for whatever reason, travel to attend. If your friend asks why you won't be there (and she may not ask) then you can say any number of things which could include:
1. Finances
2. Work
3. Other Plans
